Goethite was named in 1806 after J.W. von Goethe, who was a German poet and philosopher that had an interest in minerals. This name was first given to lepidocrocite though which is not as common as a mineral. Although they have similar composition but a different crystal structure.

Goethite is found as fibers, scales, needle-like structures, masses, prismatic crystals, radial stalactites, and pipe organ structures. It may be yellow, orange, red, black, or brown.
