United States. Ulexite has been considered a mineral since 1840, and it was named after George Ludwig Ulex who made the first chemical analysis of the mineral. It is an interesting gemstone with unusual characteristics. It is also called TV Rock because it can transmit light as television does through internal reflection. It’s a natural fiber optic so when you place it over something it can transmit the image on the stone’s surface. In 1963 the fiber optics qualities in Ulexite were discovered and explained by Weichel-Moore and Potter.

Ulexite is too soft and fragile to wear in jewelry. These stones are transparent to translucent and white with a silky luster when polished. Ulexite has a Mohs hardness rating of just 2 to 2.5, and it belongs to the rare group of borate minerals. These minerals are so rare because they can only form in geologically active intermontane basins.
