Alexandrite is now found in Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Brazil as well as in Russia. It was originally discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the 1830s. Named after Czar Alexander II of Russia, on whose 21st birthday it was discovered. It was well-loved by the Russians because it has red and green which was similar to the national military colors of imperial Russia.

Alexandrite is somewhat of a chameleon gemstone that changes from green in daylight to red in lower light because of the way the mineral absorbs light which is also known as the Alexandrite effect.
